Violins

Just in is an exceptional and glamorous violin by Paul Bailly of 1900. The setting-up has nearly been completed, and the price is likely to be £13,000. Also I have violins by Lavest of Montlucon, Jean Striebig and Claude Chevrier.

English violins

Presently having a new bass-bar fitted is arguably the finest William Forster violin surviving. Literally a text-book example, (The British Violin BVMA, 2000)this has the name of the man it was made for in 1786 in ink under the fingerboard.

Other nationality violins

Just in are two Italian violins, by Giovanni Gaida at £12,000 and by Andreas Renisto at £8,000. I have an Italian violin with a rather tenuous attribution to Goffriller, which however probably is Venetian and from the early part of the 18th Century. It has been restored (with very beautiful work) in France during the 19th Century, and I have photographs of the original Italian corner blocks which have been strengthened at this time, together with the restorer's inscription. A very good-looking and exceptional sounding instrument at £9,500. Oh, and another Perry & Wilkinson of Dublin, but this time an early example dated 1773.
